Settlers iu the district from Pahautanui to Waikanae or thereabouts are complaining of the havoc wrought by opossums upon their fruit crops. Orchards and gardens situated near the patches of standing bush, where these animals have their lairs, have naturally suffered the most severely. The opossums seem to be particularly loud of apples and pears, but no sort of fruit comes amiss to them, and they are not particular as to whether it is ripe or not. It is stated that iu some instances they have destroyed halt ike crop.
