A NARROW ESCAPE.
ATTACKED BY AN OCTOPUS.
We are informed that an exciting incident occurred the other day at a point a little north of Kerita. Several Maoris, young and old, were bathing when one of the youngsters saw a dark object lying motionless on the surface of the water. He swam towards it and when about a yard from it was horrified to see that it was one of the dreaded octopi. The lad turned rapidly and commenced to swim lor liie shore, shouting out for help. One of his feet came into contact with the tentacles of the octupus, which immediately wound its slimy limb round the boy’s leg. The screams of the imprisoned lad attracted the others, and two men swam out to his assistance. When they reached the boy both his legs were tightly bound by the tentacles and the blood-sucker was endeavouring to work its way to the lad’s lace. The Maoris succeeded in dragging the octopus to shallow water, though several times they found their legs grasped by a feeler, and after rescuing the boy they attacked the octopus and stoned it to death. —Thames Star.
