The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, May 23, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Hon. G. Laurenson declares that the newspaper press of the Dominion is being rapidly bought up by the Conservative party so as to beat the progressive element of this country. He was in Taranaki recently, and says he found that the province provides about as gross an example of the way in which the Opposition are buying up the newspapers as could be discovered. “In Taranaki,” says the Minister, “there are twelve newspapers published. Of these, two support the Government, two are independent, and eight are Opposition. From Wanganui to Wellington there are ten newspapers ; three of these support the Government and seven support the Opposition, in the Wairarapa there are six papers ; one supports the Government and five support the Opposition. In Hawke’s Bay there are seven papers ; one supports the Government and six support the Opposition. The Eiberal-Eabour element of this country can only counteract this monstrous stale of affairs by facts and figures used on the platform, and the present Ministry propose to make -use of this means of putting the true tacts of the present political position before the people of New Zealand.”
Fkeung is running very high in Greytown over the appointment of a head teacher of the State school. The Wellington Education Board promoted Mr Charters, late head-teacher, to inspector, and appointed a successor Mr Davies (Di. certificate) in his stead- The Board did not submit any other names to the committee, although it is alleged that other better qualified teachers would have applied lor the position. The committee, after due consideration, decided to endorse the appointment. A section of the public is dissatisfied with the committee’s actipn in endorsing the appointment, and a meeting of householders was recently held, which at times was of a lively nature. The following resolution was carried :—“That this meeting desires to protest against the method adopted by the Wellington Education Board in appointing the headmaster ol the Greytown District High School.” “That, in pursuance of the foregoing resolution, the Education Board be asked to annul the appointment of headmaster, and call for applications in the usual way.” According to the Act the appointment must stand.
