A SERIOUS CHARGE.

SADLER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

Christchurch, May 8

Walter Richard Sadler appeared on remand at the Police Court this morning charged with attempting to perform an illegal operation on a girl at Kaiapoi on April Bth. The Court was cleared.

The woman in the case deposed that she was living with her parents at Kaiapoi, and would be nineteen years of age in June next. She had known a certain man for lour years, and had “kept company” with him for about three. Witness wa« three or lour months pregnant. She knew the accused Sadler, who was a hairdresser working recently in Wellington, for about two years, having met him at a dance in Kaiapoi. The man she had kept company with knew about her trouble, and they arranged for an operation. Sadler was mentioned as the man to perform it. The saw the man and Saddler in Kaiapoi on Easter Monday, at about noon. The three went to the man’s house. Witness then described what occurred there.

A further charge was preferred against Sadler, that ou April 26th at Wellington, he attempted to perform an illegal operation on the same girl, who gave evidence similar to that given by her in respect to the previous charge. She added that ou April 25th she left Kaiapoi, and went to Christchurch (where the man before mentioned bought her a first-class ticket to Wellington under au assumed name). Witness knew then that she was going to see Sadler, and her reason for going was to attempt to procure a miscarriage. She went to Wellington by the Maori, was met, by arrangement, by a young man, and stayed that day (April 26th) at a private hotel. In the evening they went up to Kelburne, and were joined by Sadler. Sadler and witness went went into the gardens, where the alleged operation was performed. They returned to the young man who was waiting, and he and Sadler spoke apart for a little. Then Sadler left them, and the young man got her luggage and she returned to the ship and so back to Lyttelton.

Accused reserved his defence and was committed for trial on both charges. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of and one surety of ,£2OO.
