The Overseer reported as follows : Awahou Riding.—The contractor for supplying and delivering metal on the Foxton-Shannon road has made a start with his contract on the above road and had only delivered about a hundred yards of metal when the Horowhenua County Council gave him notice that the roads were closed lor heavy traffic and that they could not allow any heavy carting on their road till after the end of August. The contract has therefore been stopped tor the present time. The road is in a very bad state and I have made arrangements to have the worst places patches up with metal delivered by the tram to Foxton. In any case under the present conditions and state of the road it would be adviable to close the road against heavy traffic for the winter season. Mr C. Martin has completed the metalling of 156-i chains of the Foxton Beach road and with the exception of widening and the formation in a lew places which will be proceeded with in a few days, the work has been carried out very satisfactorily. 1 have arranged and let with the contractor the extension of the road to high water mark towards Cleland’s for the sum of This includes formation, claying, metalling and fascining works, but tram charges, tolls and truck hire will bring the cost up to £57.
