The Chairman 01 the Manawatu County Council (Mr J. G. Wilson) slated at Tuesday’s meeting, while the question of heavy traffic was being discussed, that during tue past twelve years the amount expended iu metal for roads, had increased from ,£l+7l to ,£5750 per annum.
An interesting operation was witnessed last week at a shoeing lorge at Te Kuiti when a team of bullocks were shod. The bullocks are intended fur ' hauling on the roads, and the shoes are for protection against the metal. Uulortuaately, metal dues nut extend a sufficient distance to enable the hauling to be done by horses, yet the protection is ueccessary for the bullocks. At the meeting of the Manawatu County Council on Tuesday, the chairmaiu stated that their clerk (Mr A. K, Drew) had been with mem now lor a number ot years, and had carried out his duties in a thoroughly efficient manner. It was only fitting, therefore that that they should increase his salary by an additional £To per annum. He moved iu that direction, and the motion was carried. The decision of the Council was a very commendable oue, Mr Drew | being an able, painstaking, and energetic official. For chronic chest complaints, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, is 6d, 2s 6d. The attendance at the Municipal Pictures last evening showed an improvement in the numbers usually present at Wednesday entertainments. The drama, “Macbeth,” was perhaps the mos uoteble picture screened, and tb inclusion of apparently genuhu wild animals of the jungle in two ot the comic items was clever and interesting.
