MOUTOA NOTES.

(Own Correspondent)

The Manawatu river was in high flood last Sunday, but beyond scaring and otherwise disturbing the peaceful slumbers of some of the tiaxraillers, no damage was reported. The weather during the past week has been anything but favourable to farmers and millers, but as we are an optimistic people we take what is given us in the shape of weather with good grace. The new mill which is being erected by the Green Flaxdressing Company is watched with interest. I hear that it will be equipped with a new and powerful steam engine and boiler. If this is so, the mill will be a credit to the company and also to the neighbourhood. Mr Cyril Green, the manager, has had his dwelling house removed to the Moutoa side of the river. All the flaxmills and some of the settler’s residences in Moutoa are now connected by telephone and the convenience is very much appreciated. I hear that Mr Donald Green, of Maitai, has puichased a block of flax at Dongburn and intends to erect a flaxmill in that locality. A dance was held recently in the private hall lent by Mr Doyle. A good number were present. The music was supplied by the Moutoa Musical Company and a very enjoyable evening was spent. It is the intention of the committee to hold fortnightly dances in Mr Doyle’s hall.

The subscription list for the purpose of raising luuds for the erection of a public hall at Moutoa is now in the hands of Mrs K, Hall, Whitaunui, and judging by the liberal manner in which the employees of Whitaunui are responding to the object, the list should show a substantial amount when presented. When the whole of the district’s subscriptions are in the hall will soon after be an established fact.
