A meeting of the Hon. J. A. Miil.tr's Dunedin and Rcslyu committees was held to-night at his reque c t to hear a statement as to the circumstances under which he declined to proceed to the final nomination for the position of Prime Minister at the caucus recently held iu Wellington. The meeting was held iu piivate and Mr Millar was very frank iu the statement that iu his opinion the relation of the parties at present was so close as to render it impossible for the business of the country to be carried on satisfactorily, and that unless a party could be found having a substantial working majority, it was iu the best interests of the Dominion that an election should be held as soon as possible. He requested members of the committee to allow him a free hand iu future, promising that he would uot iu any way depart from the principles which he had advocated in the past. The meeting which was most enthusiastic, decided unanimously “That this meeting desire to express its complete confidence In Mr Millar and gives him a free baud to act iu the future as he thinks best iu the interests of Otago and the Dominion of New Zealand.”
