Since the inclusion of the suburbs ia the borough, New Plymouth, with a population of 6338, claims twelth place in the list of towns in the Dominion. Excluding the four centres, the towns with larger populations than New Plymouth are Invercargill, 12,782; Timaru, 11,280; Palmerston North, 10.991 ; Wanganui, 10.929; Napier, 8,537; Gisborne, 8196 : Nelson, 8051.
The Government statistical tables just to band relating to local governing bodies (1910-xx) show that as far as receipts are concerned, Southland County heads the list with Cook County second and Rangitikei third. The chief items are Southland area 3852 square miles, total receipts £48,760, total expenditure £39,33 6 , amount spent on public works £28,765. Cook, area 1088 square miles, total receipts ,£43,229, total expenditure ,£35,353, amount spent on public works £26,428. Rangitikei area 1100 square miles, total receipts ,£42,270, total expenditure ,£34,768, amount spent on public works £28,698, The figures for Kiwitea are area 336 square miles, £i 4 ,24 2 £13,099, £7927 J Manawatu, 267 square miles, £14,713, £14,213, £10,641 ; Oroua 213 square miles, £7 2 79, £6851, £4529. It will thus be seen that Rangitikei County Council spent on public works the second largest amount in New Zealand, and is only £67 behind Southland, the leading County.
