VISIT OF A PIONEER.
Mr Wm. Udy, of Greytown, and father of the well-known N.Z. football representatives, K. and D. Udy, is visiting Foxton. Mr Udy remembers Foxton some thirty years ago. At that time he was living tor a period in Otaki, and the Oraki-ites came over to play Foxton cricket. He remembers also one Robinson, who was a demon bowler for Foxton in those days. A wonderful change has taken place in the town since he last saw it, and he was much impressed with the neat dwellings and public buildings. By the way, Mr Udy is one of the Dominion’s pioneer settlers, having arrived with his parents in one of the five first ships which brought out the pilgrim lathers in 1840, and landed them on the Petoue beach. Mr Udy is no»v 74 years of age, and has just come through a critical illness, but he added, in his jovial style, “I managed to dodge the devil.” His illness reduced his 19 stone sturdy frame to 14 stone. He was surprised to hear of the passing away of the late Mrs Saunders, ol Moutoa, whom he knew as Miss Jessie McHardie in the early days. "Yes,” he said, “I can only count a lew of the old pioneers now —the grim messenger has claimed nearly all of them.” During his local peregrinations yesterday, he dropped across an acquaintance of his youth in the person ol Mr C. Golder, local watchmaker, and the two discussed the Hutt and its original settlers. Mr Udy’s father was for many years Mayor of Greytown, and was held in the highest esteem throughout the Wellington district for his uprightness of character. Mr Wm. Udy has taken a keen interest in local and Dominion politics, and has filled the civic chair occupied by his father with marked ability. He is one of the true blue liberals, and has ever been a keen supporter of the Parly from the lime ol Sir George Grey down. He was one of the old-time volunteer officers, and a splendid all-round athlete, and despite his recent struggle with death, is as active as the majority ol men halt his age. He is the descendant of a grand old Cornish family, and has done his share in breaking the ground for future generations in this country. Mr Udy is one of the pioneers of the tlaxmiiiiug industry. Air Udy is spending a lew days at the Beach.
