ELECTION PETITION.

Blenheim, March iS

The hearing of the petition of William Carr, John O’Sullivan and John Laukow against the return of Richard McCallum as member 0! the House of Representatives for Wairau electorate was commenced this morning before Sir Joshua Williams and Mr Justice Chapman. Mr Sinclair appears tor petitioners and Mr Skerrett, K.C., and with him Mr Mills, for the respondent. The petition consists of twentyseven clauses containing allegations of bribery, treating and various othei corrupt and illegal practices.

Counsel for the petitioners withdrew two allegations charging the supporters of respondent with importuning electors for votes ior McCallum as they amounted to intimidation. He asked leave to introduce two fresh ones, the first charging McCallum with bribery at Seddou and the second treating the electors to refreshment in Blenheim. Decision on this point was reserved.

Mr Skerrett argued that the clauses which alleged treating at Grovetown and Seddon should be struck out as particulars were not given as ordered by Sir Joshua Williams in the preliminary hearing.
