Writes one who has lately visited Santiago, the capital of Chili From one end of Santiago to the other runs the Alameda —an avenue four miles long. Trees are planted down the centre, making a most delightlul promeu ade. On either side of the trees run broad roads, and the irrigation waters flow by the side of the trees. Everyone is to be seen on the Alameda. It is amazing to one where wealth is fairly evenly distributed, as in New Zealand, to see the affluence and poverty in Chili. But the poor peons are usually of a happy temperament.

Evidently there is a touch ox humour even amongst prisoners in the New Plymouth gaol. At a recent farewell gathering to a minister of the Gospel in New Plymouth, the departing parson told a good story against himself. On the first occasion of his visiting the gaol, one of the prisoners proposed that his mates should join him in a verse or two of “Welcome, Weary Wanderer, Home.” On his farewell visit to gaol, the minister had again to protest, when one of the prisoners suggested a verse ot “God Be With You Till We Meet Again,”— Herald.
