HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S SHOW.

The weather for the opening day of the Horticultural Society's Show was by no means good, but it was far and away better than that experienced on Thursday, when heavy rain fell during practically the whole of the afternoon and evening. This interfered greatly with the attendance, there being only a few people present.

During the evening the members of Mr Betty’s orchestra that were present played a couple of selection, and His Worship the Mayor presented the certificates to the successful candidates at the recent examination in connection with the local branch of the St. John’s Ambulance Association.

The sheep-guessing competition was won by Mr H. C. Patterson, who guessed the correct weight ii3lbs. The next best guess was that of Mrs Patterson of i^lbs.

The points prizes in the different classes were won as follows: Pot plant, Mrs McCarthy ; cut blooms, Mrs A. S. Easton ; fruit, Mr W. E. Bullard ; vegetables, Mr H. A. Hussey; larm produce, Moutoa school; cookery and home industries, Miss Speirs ; cookery, girls under 14, Misses L. Woodroofe and H. Mackie ; decorative, Miss E. Edlin ; decorative, children 12 to 15, Erica Chalmers ; children under 12, Hazel Newth. The prize for the champion dahlia was won by Mr W. H. Gunning. In our last issue we stated that the prize for the best decorated table was won by Table No. 20, this should have read Table No. 2.

The receipts in connection with the show totalled ,£3l 8s 4d, made up as under: Door receipts, £8 iSs 6d ; tea rooms, ,£4 16s ; sweet stall, £s 9 s tod 1 sheep-guessing competition, £2 17s ; button holes, 9s 9d ; entrance fees, £8 17s 3d.
