THE MOUNTED TERRITORIALS.
ENCAMPMENT TO BE HEED
AT FOXTON
Captain Powles visited Foxton on Tuesday for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements in connection with the encampment of the Mounted Territorials of this district, which it has been decided to hold at Foxton.
The Foxton Racing Club and Messrs Robinson Bros, have placed their properties at the disposal of the Defence Department, and the encampment will be held on these grounds, commencing from May 22nd. The encampment will last eight days, and will conclude with military sports, which will be held on the racecourse.
The district that will be represented at this encampment extends from Wellington to Wanganui and Taihape, and for the eight days 500 men will be in camp. Tenders are to be invited for the catering 01 500 men, and also for feeding 500 horses. There will be what is known as a dry canteen in connection with the camp, at which tobacco, cigarettes, fruit, soft drinks, etc., will be sold, and prices for the right to run same are also to be invited.
The grounds selected are very suitable lor the purpose, the only drawback being, perhaps, that at present there is not a sufficient supply of water, but it is anticipated that this difficulty will be overcome by laying pipes from the railway windmill, permission for which, we understand, has been applied for from the Railway Department.
Captain Powles, who will be in charge of the camp, will visit Foxton again at a later date to make final arrangements.
