HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A committee meeting of the above to make final arrangements for the Autumn Show, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday next, was held in the Coronation Hall supper room on Thursday night. The chair was occupied by the president,, Mr Alex. Speirs, and there were also present: Messrs Patterson, Witcbell, Woods, Newth, Walsh, T. Henderson, Boyes, Hornblow, Mesdames Seabury, Adams, Greig, Boyes, Misses Speirs, J. Ross, Symons and Neylon. Correspondence was received from Messrs T. Horton and Co., donating prize of 10s 6d in nursery stock, to be donated to any class. From the secretary of the Foxton Racing Club, donating one guinea and thanking the society for the use of tables.
From the Bowling Club, enclosing 10s 6d for use of club’s property. From Messrs Shailer and Wightou, asking for space and consenting to.officiate as judges. From Messrs Schladdt Bros., of Christchurch, asking for space to erect an iron frame glass house and forcing house. It was decided to acknowledge with thanks receipt of donations from the Racing Club and Bowling Club. The Chairman said that the society was only too pleased to loan its property to local institutions without looking for any reward, provided any damage done was made good. At the same time the society appreciated the donations.
It was decided to give the space asked for by nurserymen. It was pointed out that the glass house aud forcing bed proposed to be erected by Messrs Schladdt Bros,, of Christchurch, would be of special interest to the general public aud of educational value. Accounts were passed for payment.
Mr Shailer was appointed judge of pot plants, cut blooms, fruit ami vegetables; Mr Kempster, dairy produce ; Mrs B, S. Penny (Carnarvon), decorative; Mrs W. Davis (Rougotea), cookery aud home industries.
The following stewards were appointed ; Pot plants, Miss Speirs ; cut blooms, Viesdames Greig and Boyes and Miss Signal; fruit, Mr F. Woods ; vegetables, Messrs T. Henderson and Jas. Whyte ; tarm produce, Messrs Geo. Barber and Bullard ; cookery, Mrs Kempster and Miss Neylon; home industries, Mr Hornblow ; dairy produce, Mr S. B. Collins; decorative, Miss Symons. Mrs Seabury consented to take charge of the tea rooms and Mesdames Adams and Boyes the sweets stall.
Competitions and sheep-guess-ing, Mr Claris.
Messrs Henderson and Newth were re-appointed doorkeepers.
It was decided that stewards see that the public and exhibitors are excluded from the hall when the judging Is proceeding, and that the rule in regard to late entries be strictly enforced.
It was decided to endeavour to secure the services of the local orchestra for the purpose of providing au instrumental programme during the evenings.
