BOWLING CLUB CARNIVAL.

For some considerable time past the members and ladies connected with the local bowling club have been busy making arrangements tor the club's carnival, and when the time for opening came yesterday afternoon everything was in apple-pie order. From even a casual glance round the hall it was apparent that those responsible tor the function, must have put in an enormous amount of work. The different stalls were all well got up and the goods dis, played iu such a manner as to command the attention ot those present. The attendance iu the afternoon was not as large as it was anticipated it would be, but nevertheless good business was doue by the stallholders. In the evening there were more people present, and at the invitation ot Mr Heuuessy, President ot the club, His Worship the Mayor performed the opening ceremony. He congratulated the ladies and all those who had assisted, for the splendid display of fancy work and produce that was exhibited for sale. It did them all great ciedit, and showed what a vast amount of time had been expended on making the carnival a success. The effort was being made to pay the cost of the new pavilion just erected iu the club’s ground, and it was hoped that a sum of ,£IOO would be realised, and he trusted that this amount would be raised. The dub had been the means of bringing together young and old to enjoy a pastime that was popular all over the world, and more particularly was it beneficial to those who were advancing in years, it had apparently given them a new lease ot lire, and they certainly appeared to have been greatly beuefitted by the game. He had great pleasure iu declaring the carnival open.

The stall holders were as follows :—Plain and children’s ; Mrs Witched and Miss Ross, assisted by Misses Edwards, B. Speirs and K. Robinson. They were dressed in Olde English style. The sweet stall was presided over by Mesdames Woods and Adam's in Dutch attire. Mrs Boyes, dressed as a Sweet Pea had charge of the flower stall. The bran tub and fish pond were under the supervision of Mrs Greig (Queen of Hearts). The Liberty stall was conducted by Mesdames Hamer, Ross, Hunt and Misses Speirs, Heunessy and Neylou (powder and patches). Fruit and produce, Misses J. and N. Coley (sunflowers). Tearooms, Mesdames C. Robinson and Nye and Misses King, Thynue, Stacpoole and de Ridder (powder and patches). Messrs F. Woods and Stunell had charge of the guessing competitions lor the sheep, donated by Messrs Easton and Co., and pig given by Mr G. O. Barber. Two nail driving competitions for cushions were decided last night, the winners being Mrs D. Whibley and Mr Yates. Mrs. Adams held the successful ticket in the raffle for a chair and cushion. In the weight guessing competitions, Mr Shadbolt won the sheep, with a guess of 68)4 lbs, the correct weight being 69 lbs. The weight of the pig was lbs, and this was guessed by Mrs Stiles and Messrs Petrie and Bain. In the draw-off Mrs Stiles was successful. The carnival will open again this evening.
