THE BRISBANE STRIKE.
Brisbane, Feu. 15._ The Employers’ Federation discussed the strike committee’s application lor a conference. It is understood that the request was refused ou the ground that the committee had not stated the points it is desired to discuss. A meeting of master printers decided not to take their men back unconditionally. Each application will be treated on its merits. They declare that the men will only be employed if they sign on as nonunionists, and forfeit their wages for the time the strike occupied. Hotels opened until the usual hour to-night. The reply of the Employers Federation declining a conference gave various reasons why it was not granted at the present time, and concludes that, while anxious that members of unions who were induced to participate in the strike without having any grietance against their employers, should return to work. In many instances their places have been filled, and the men who filled them have a claim upon the employers, and cannot be displaced because the strike committee now desires a resumption ol work.
Sydney, Feb. 17. The coal lumpers refused to work the steamer Cornwall from Brisbane while at Brisbane. The captain ordered the firemen and seamen to unload bunker coal. They declined, and the captain logged them, the Sydney lumpers striking in sympathy with Brisbane,
In consequence of the wharf labourers ignoring the agreement recently made with the shipowners the latter have notified the Waterside Workers’ Association that the agreement is terminated.
