SCHOOL TEACHER’S APPEAL.

STAGPOOLE v. WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The teacher’s appeal case, Stagpoole v. the Wanganui Education Board, is of vital interest to those engaged in the teaching profession. It will be remembered that Mr Stagpoole, headmaster of the Linton school, was dismissed by the Board lor the following reasons ;

(1) That his work, as evidenced by the Inspector’s repoits, is of

an unsatisfactory nature. (2) That he does not exercise sufficient control over his pupils. (3) That his demeanour towards

his assistant is unworthy of a

man in his position. (4) That generally Mr Stagpoole is not competent to carry out to the satisfaction of the Board the duties of head-teacher of a Grade IV. school. Mr Stagpoole’s replies to the above are :

(1) I am a duly qualified teacher. (2) My professional record is

satisfactory. (3) My moral character has never been called in question. (4) I have the confidence of my committee and the parents of the pupils.

The appeal was opened at Wanganui on Saturday, before Mr W. Kerr, S.M., and Messrs E. LBroad (Board’s representative) and R. McNab (Institute’s representative).

Mr R. D. Stewart, of Auckland, appeared for the appellant, and Mr Fred Pirani for the Education Board.

Mr Stewart referred at length to the past and present history of the school, and the inspector’s reports on same.

Mr W. T. Grundy, headmaster of the Clyde Quay school, Wellington, and acting-inspector of schools, also gave expert evidence, after which the proceedings were adjourned till Saturday, February 17th, at 10 a.m., at Palmerston.
