FOXTON RACES.

ANNUAL MEETING. The Foxton Racing Club’s annual race meeting was held on Saturday and Monday and was undoubtedly the most successful in the history of the Club. On the first day the weather was dull and threatening, but with the exception of one slight shower, remained fine all day. The attendance was good. On Monday the weather could not have been better, and consequently there was a record crowd present. The amount of money put through the totalisator for the two days easily topped the previous year’s figures. On Saturday the amount handled was and on Monday ,£12,809 making a total of £23,690, an increase over last year. The fields all through were large, and the racing particularly interesting, some very close finishes being witnessed, and the Club’s handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, is to be congratulated on his excellent adjustments. The starting of Mr Angus Keith was one of the features of the meeting, and his excellent despatches contributed in a large measure to the good racing that those present had the pleasure of witnessing. The work of the judge on both days was no sinecure, but he carried out his duties particularly well- He had some very close finishes to judge. His decisions were promptly and with one exception, accurately given. The exception was in the last race, when Thetis was given third place instead of Winning Post. Thetis finished about ninth, but her number was hoisted as third. The jockey however, did not bother to go to the scales, but Brady, rider of Winning Post, weighed in correctly. The silent totalisator recently installed was a great improvement, but the working of same could have been improved upon. On the first day the races were not started up to time, the last race being run practically an hour later than the tune set out in the card. On me second day, however, the events, with the exception of the two last, were got off well to time.

Fortunately, the meeting terminated without any serious accident being recorded. On Saturday, Trask, the rider of Miss Jean, got knockedoff prior to the start, and received a severe shaking. He was, however, all right again yesterday.

The purchaser of the gates, Mr J. Wyeth, sustained a rather big loss through a large number of , people, who arrived by train, jumping over the fence. Through some bungle the train ran past the gates, and pulled up several chains away, and the passengers swarmed out of the carriages and jumped over the fence. The gate-keepers had no means of collecting their admission money, and practically the whole of them got on to the course free. It is estimated that through this bungle on the part of some of the railway officials, Mr Wyeth’s takings were or under what they should have been.

The luncheon booths were under the capable management of Messrs Langley Bros., who provided an excellent spread. Local horses accounted for two races on the second day, Puketotara winning the Carnarvon Welter and Waiouru the Newmarket Handicap. The win of Waiouru was undoubtedly the most popular of the meeting, and on returning to weigh in the jockey and horse were loudly cheered.

We desire to congratulate Mr W, Gray upon the excellent manner in which he carried out his duties as secretary, and the success of the meeting was no doubt due to a very large extent to the splendid work of himself and his assistants.

NOTES ON THE RACING. The Palmerston owned and trained Captain annexed the Hurdles in hollow fashion after lying in a handy position in the early stages, and going to the front at the top bend. Allure, owned by Mr Mcßeth, of Wanganui, and trained in Taranaki, was favourite, and beat Attention by a neck for second place. Fond Memory finished fourth, and Seaman fifth. Parewanui led all the way in the Electric Hack, and won by a clear length, the race between Waitoto and Minora for second place being a fine one, the Foxton owned mare'getting the money by a neck. Overheard was left at the post, and took no part in the race. The scratching pen reduced the field for the Foxton Cup to half a dozen, and the public found it hard to separate them, all being very evenly backed, Queen of Scots having slightly better support than the rest. Early in the race it appeared as if Adria’s performance in the same event two years ago was going to be repeated, as the Hawke’s Bay owned Meremere, ridden by an apprentice, was. taken to the front, and soon had a long lead. When half the distance was covered it looked a certain win for Meremere, but a mile satisfied her, and Matlow headed her rounding the home bend. Midian and Julian were close handy, and in the straight the former took charge, and won very easily by two lengths. Julian beat Matlow by a length for second place, the others finishing in the following order : Meremere, Vi, Queen of Scots. A field of twenty-four was saddled up for the Trial Stakes. Nukuatu was first out, and led all the way, winning by a length from Goodform, Miss Roberts third. The rider of Miss Jean, L. Trask, fell off when doing his preliminary, and was rather badly injured, being rendered unconscious. Another rider was secured. Bonnie Boy was favourite.

The locally owned Stevens was favourite for the Awahou Welter. Retreat led way from a good start, Merrie Emerald being her closest attendant round the back. The latter went to the tront. rounding the home turn, and won comfortably by two lengths from Waiputere, with Stevens a length back third, Bay Paul fourth, and Leonta fifth. Lady Moutoa was a solid favourite for the Flying Handicap.

She got all the worst of the start, and could only run third to Blue Lake and Winning Post. Blue Lake led throughout, and was never hurried, having two lengths to the good at the finish. Another large field went out in the Dash Hack, Ineuru being a hot favourite. Easy was first away, but was soon caught by the favourite, who had a lohg lead in the straight. The Phaeton gelding Eminent, however, came with a late run, and won on the post by a head. Easy was two length? away third, and Adella fourth. Con the Shaughran was a solid favourite for the final event, hut bad to give place to Seaton Dale. The favourite led to the distance, where Seaton Dale had his measure, and won comfortably bv two lengths. Overtime was third, and Afterthought fourth.

NOTES ON THE RACING

All the acceptors faced the barrier in the Hack Hurdles, for which the public sorted out the previous day’s winner, Captain. Eyia and Attention were also well backed. From the start Allure and Attention went to the front followed by Eiya. Passing the stand Eiya and Seawind were in front, and Highden last. Eiya led to the bend, when Captain who was lying about fourth came through. An excellent race up the straight resulted in Captain getting the verdict by a head. Eiya was fourth, Fond Memory fifth and Highden sixth. At the second to last hurdle Chasemab fell, but fortunately her rider escaped uninjured. There were no scratchings for the Telephone Hack Handicap. Nukuatu, Ineuru, Miss Roberts and Eminent were all well supported. From a good start Aurora took the lead followed by Nukuatu and Miss Roberts. Aurora led to the bend and then fell back. At the finish Nukuatu had half a length to spare.

The winner of the last race on Saturday, Seaton Dale, was installed favourite for the President’s Handicap, for which there were seven starters. After going a quarter of a mile the order was, Seaton Dale, Julian, Mallow and Ambrosian. Turning into the straight they were well bunched and almost every horse’s name was called in turn as a likely winner. The finish was fought out by Julian, Mallow and Midiau, Julian winning by a head with Midian a length away third. Twenty starters faced the barrier in the Maiden Scurry, and from a fair start soon strung out. It looked anyone’s race at the turn. Coming up the straight Goodform sneaked through on the rails and beat Master Krlcherau by a neck. Only two horses were scratched in the Carnarvon Welter, leaving a field of twelve. Florence Nightingale showed out early in the race with Overheard running second, and Waiputerie third. At tlie three furlong post Waitotoand I’uketotara moved up. Coming into the straight they were well bunched. It was a splendid finish between the placed horses Puketotara winning by a nose from Waiputerie with Merrie Emerald a head away. Rangimaru finished 20 lengths behind the field. Hinekorangi, the favourato for the Newmarket Handicap, got the worst of the start and was never in the race, running last all the way. From the barrier Te Kahurangi jumped out followed by Blue Take and Eady Moutoa. The last named looked all over a winner half way down the straight, but Waiouru made a late run on the outside and got up just in time to win by a nose. Blue Take was half a length away.

Minora was made a hot favourite for the January Hack Handicap, but had to fill second place to Kasy, with the outsider, Eord Palmer, third. The last race was delayed at the start by Kohinoor and Afterthought playing up. The former got a good start and was prominent all the way, just lasting long enough to beat Meremere by a very small margin. Thetis was given third place by the judge, but Winning Post finished in that position. Thetis was ninth, Stevens eleventh and Afterthought last. WI iNNING JOCKEYS. C. Price was the most successful jockey at the meeting, riding four winners. E. Eowe, V. Cotton and A. McMullen had two winning mounts, and F. Homes, J. Kemp, V. Eee, O. McCarten, F. Holt and H.
