THE PASSING OF A PIONEER.
MRS SAUNDERS— AGED 75
YEARS,
It is our painful duty to record the death of one of the oldest colonists aud a pioneer of the Moutoa district, in the person of Mrs Janet Saunders, relict of the late Mr James Saunders. The dissolution took place at her son’s (Mr Alex Saunders) residence Moutoa, at 8.30 a.m. to-day. Up to about a mouth ago the deceased had enjoyed almost perfect health, but latterly was seized with heart trouble and other complications, followed by an apoplectic stroke. The late Mrs Saunders was born in Thrums, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with her parents, the, late Mr aud Mrs David McHardie, in the ship “Lady Nugent” in 1841. She was then five years of age. The family settled in the Hutt, where her father followed farming pursuits. In 1866 she married her late husband aud removed with him to Featherston. After spending two years in that district Mr and Mrs Saunders and family removed to Moutoa, where she resided up to the time *of her death. She leaves a family of tour daughters and three sons, namely Mrs Kirby of Torquay, England, Mrs Nicholls, Westhavea (Nelsou), Mrs McKenzie (Petoue), Mrs Jagger (Moutoa); Mr J. P. Saunders Ngaere (Taranaki), N. G. Saunders Westhaven (Nelsou) aud Alex. Saunders (Moutoa) ; also fifteen grandchildren, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. The funeral will take place on Thursday next, leaving Mr Alex. Sauuders' residence for the Foxton cemetery at 1.15 p.m. arriving at the graveside at 2.30 p.m.
