VALEDICTORY.

A valedictory social and presentation was tendered to Mr Nicholson, late statioumaster, who has been transferred to Taumarauui, in iMesdames Henderson and Cunninghame’s rooms last night. The function was organised by members of the local railway staff. There was a representative gathering present. The chair was occupied by Mr T. Henderson and the guest of the evening was seated on his right. The chairman, in proposing the toast of the departing stationmaster, while expressing regret at his transfer, congratulated him upon his promotion and wished him every success in the luture. Although Mr Nicholson had only been a short timeiu Foxton he had, by his obliging and courteous manner, quickly won his way into public favour and was held iu the highest esteem by the railway staff. He had discharged his multifarious duties with credit to himself aud to the department. The toast was drunk with musical honours. Mr Nicholson, with characteristic modesty, suitably replied. At a later stage the guest was made the recipient ol a case of pipes, tobacco pouch aud soverign case as a token of esteem from the staff aud others. The chairman welcomed Mr Dauiells, the guest’s successor, and felt sure from what they had already seeu ot him that he would uphold the splendid reputation ot his predecessors. His health was also drunk with musical honours and Mr Dauiells suitably responded. During the evening other toasts were honoured and a number oi songs contributed aud much appreciated. At the conclusion, “God be with you till we meet again,” was sung iu harmony.

Mr Nicholson aud family left by this morning’s train tor their new home, carrying away with them the good wishes of a large circle ol friends.
