HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well attended committee meeting of the above was held last night. The President, Mr Alex Speirs, occupied the chair. The treasurer’s statement disclosed a credit balance of odd. A statement ut receipts and expenditure in connection with the spring show was submitted and considered very satisfactory. A discussion took place in respect to the rule governing late entry fees. It was pointed out that this rule had been set aside at the late show. The Chairman said the rule was waived at the bulb show, and to a certain extent at the spring show because of the paucity of entries in certain classes. If it was the desire of the committee the rule could be strictly enforced in future.—Mr Witchell said it was not fair to allow persons to exhibit at the last minute, after possibly visiting the exhibits in the hall, besides it imposed a good deal of extra work on the secretary.—The Chairman said the secretary should have an assistant on the first day of the show. The society was in its infancy, and they had to encourage exhibitors as much as possible. The question was raised as to whether exhibitors could provide their own vases for exhibits. —The Chairman said that the society provided its own vases and tubes, but he could not see any reason against allowing exhibitors to use their own vases.

The following committee was appointed to draw up the autumn catalogue : Mesdames Boyes and Greig, Misses Ross and Neylou and Messrs Witchell, Bullard, Newth and Walsh. The committee to meet next Monday night,

It was decided to fix the date of the autumn show at the next committee meeting when the catalogue will be confirmed, and in the meanwhile the secretary will ascertain the dates of the Rongotea, and Otaki shows. The month of March was decided upcp.
