The most successful jockeys at theManawatu Meeting were W. Young and C. Price with four wins each.
“Mr Highden’’ topped the list of winning owners at the Manawatu meeting with opposite his name.
The Government tax to be paid by the Auckland Racing Club, being 2 x / 2 per cent, on the receipts at the summer meeting, will amount to over ,£4,500. Waipaku’s success in the Manawatu Cup was no surprise to her owner, and he was quite sanguine she would go to the front and slay there. The race was a replica of the Feildiug Cup win, in which she also bolted from her field. Waiptma, her dam, is a most valued possession, all her progeny being stake-earners—and dividend-payers!
Lady Laddo, who followed up her double at Masterton by appropriating the Terrace Welter at Palmerston, was bred by Dr Newman, who disposed of the mare for ,£l2 alter she had proved a disappointment. Evidently she was not well at the time, as she has since been a most lucrative investment for her present owner, A. M, Wright, the Foxton sportsman. The stewards of the local racing club have spent a considerable sum of money in effecting improvement t j the public appointments at the course during the past six months, and patrons of racing will notice a difference at the forthcoming meeting. The course has also received a good deal of attention and reflects great credit upon the ground committee and the caretaker, Mr Shadbolt. The Foxton meeting is recognised as one of the best conducted in the North Island, and given fine weather this year the meeting should be a record one from every point of view.*
