ENTERTAINMENT AT THE SEASIDE.
A fllsteclass entertainment was 'given at the Beach on New Year’s night with the. object of raising funds to provide at that .locality. Messrs -Da&Rand W. Oliver, of Palmerston North, were responsible for the effort and are to be congratulated upon the success achieved. The concert was held in a marquee, specially erected free of cost by Mr Dahl, in front of his residence. The tent was So situated as to leave the verandah as a stage. The performers were all Palmerston residents. Mr Oliver was responsible for the bill-of-fare, which included part songs, duets, solos, recitations, etc., concluding with a comedietta, entitled “The Doctor’s Patieifts.” The night was fipe and this accounted for a “packed house.” In fact a number were unable to gain admissioil. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr Hennessy, Chairman ol the Harbour Board, occupied the chair and eulogised those responsible for the effort to obtain a life boat. He also referred to the proposed jetty and said the Board were making application to the Railway Department lor old rails to be used in its construction, which would minimise the cost of erection. .'Nearly all the items were encored, but Special mention must be made of the humorous duet “ Money Matters ” by Miss and - Mr Dahl, and the musical monologue, “ Tragedy iu 5 acts,” by Mr S. Oliver. These items fairly convulsed the audience. Other items were: Quartette, “Dame Durden,- ’ Misses Dahl and Burgess and Messrs Haydou and T aylor; recitation; “The Whistler,” Mr S. W. Oliver; song, “You had better ask me,” Miss Burgess ; song, -jThey all -Dove Jack, ’ ’ Mr C. Taylor ; recitation, “Two Points
of View,” Miss Pearl' Dahl ; skirt ■* dance, Misses Dahl, Burgess, Hanna, Wadsworth; song, “Potted Poetry,” Mr C. Haydou ; recitation, “The Unfaithful Lover,” Miss Wadsworth 4 duet, “Why,
of Comse, .Uiss Burgess and Mr C. Hay dun; “Selected,” Mr C. Taylor; quartette, “Willie’s Courtship,” Misses Burgess and Dahl and Messrs Haydou and Taylor. After a brief interval the comedietta was staged. The caste was as follows : Dr. Truelove, Mr C. Haydon ; Dolly Truelove (his wife), Miss Wadsworth; Aunt Maria Tibbie, Miss Dahl; Uncle Jeremiah Pipkin, Mr W. Oliver ; Dooley (the man servant), Mr B. Short. The plot is excruciatingly funny and it is needless to say that those taking part did full justice to the characters they sustained. Tue funny situations and amusing dialogue sent the audience into fits of laughter and at the conclusion the . applause was loud and prolonged. The accompaniments were playec by Mr Whitehead. The management desire to thank Mrs Cleland for the loan of a
piano, Mr J, Senior for carting and any others who assisted to ~make the aSair a success, and especially to the Foxton Band which rendered several selections prior to the opening. The performers and baud were
subsequently entertained at supper ! by Mrs Dahl. The night’s lun was concluded with a dance at Mr '•.Dangley's private hotel. A most enjoyable time was spent until the small the morning. The opinion was expressed that the functions were the most successful from a social point of view yet held at the Beach.
