OVERSTATED HER AGE.
A case in which a lady overstated her age was heard by Mr E. C. Cutteu, S. M., in the Auckland Police Court the other day, when James Newton was charged with wilfully making a false statement lor the purpose of beiug inserted iu a marriage register, relating to the age of his intended bride. Evidence was given that in 1909 last, Newton met the girl of his choice, who was then 17 years of age. He suggested that it would be the proper thing to obtain her parents’ consent to their union, but she told him there was no need for that, as she was 22 years ot age. As a result of the bride’s statement that she was 22 years of age, the husband filled iu the declaration form to that effect, and the wedding took piace, even the officiating mimsrer mistaking 17 for 22. After hearing the evidence, His Worship was ot opinion that defendant did not wilfully make a false statement, and he was discharged.
