MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. There were present ; Crs J. G. Wilson (pressing,), R. B. McKenzie, W. J. Phillips, B. Gray, J. Henson, H. 11. Hunt, and W. E. Barber. Mr R. Moore, solicitor, Foxton, wrote on account ol G. Edwards, Foxlon, slating that sand was drilling on to the latter’s property Irotn land under the control of the Manawatu County Council, and

asking what the Counci* was going to do to prevent the damage.—Cr Barber and the engineer to report on the matter at the next meeting of tire Council.

The following transfer was agreed to :F. S. Easton to C. F. Johnston, part section 430. Tire treasurer (A. K. Krevvj reported as under ; General account, dr ,£2771 ns 2d : loan account, cr ,£l9O 12s yd; net debit balance, /jc-x 1 3s yd. The amounts available for expenditure to March 31st, 1912, are; Awahou, gj'll6 19s id ; Whirokino division, £72 is Sd.

The tramway manager reported as follows: —During the past month the weeds and grass have been cleared from the rails along the tram Hue 'Detween Pukenui aud Rosiua siding. The qolbs points and crossings have been placed iu position at the Rosina siding, aud the packing and grading will lie completed iu a few days’ time. A debit balance of ,£25 ys 4b is shown for the month. The steamers are running again, and business is increasing rapidly. Wool traffic has also started. The chief items of traffic for the month were : Manure, 85 J 3 tons; minerals, 47 tons ; merchandise, 147 l /z tons ; metal, *835 yards ; timber, 17,700 feet ; wool, 80 bales. Fares amounted to £2 12s 3d. The new tank for the Whale line has been erected aud completed, and should prove satisfactory. A trough is being made, aud will be erected as soon as finished. The metal traffic has been very much interfered with' by the inclement weather. Both engines are in a state ot repair. The old jigger is Deiog repaired, aud will be available for the men at the Sanson end of the line in a few days.—■ Adopted. It was resolved that, for the purpose of providing the interest and other charges on a loan of being 10 per cent, of the original loan of authorised for the completion of the drainage works in the Oroua Downs estate and the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company’s endowment, a special rate of one penny in the £ be struck ou the rateable value ot rateable property in the Oroua Downs special riding.

It was decided that the next meeting of the Council be held on Monday, Bth January, 1912. The overseer reported as follows ; Awahou Ridiug ; With reference to the selling of the road reserve on the Elkins-Motuiti road to Mr T. Bowe, it would cut off the only public access the Maoris have to their cemetery. My valuation for the above road reserve is ,£io per acre. We are now having a few yards of metal put on the F'oxton road, near the F'oxton racecourse. 1 arranged lor members ot the various local bodies interested in the Foxton Beach road to inspect the road where il joins the river beach, ou the 29th of last mouth. After inspecting the two lines of road which open ou to tile river beach at this end ot the Wharangi township, the members of the various local bodies decided to have the road made where it is now pegged off aud approved of by the Public Works Department. CouucilKns Barber and Heusen made arrangements with the contractor to pio ceed with the work, and break the stones after spreading the meta! along the formation, tor the sum of Ss per chain, Cr Barbel staled that a deputa lion from Palmerston North ban wailed on the Foxton Flat hour Board iu reference to a jetty at the Beach, as a means towards safeguarding life. The load that it was proposal to proceed with would lead to this jetty. The report was adopted.
