HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A general meeting of the Horti--1 cultural Society was held in the Coronation Hall supper room on Thursday night. The president (Mr Alex. Speirs) occupied the j chair and there was a good al- ! tendance of members. I A letter was read from Mrs Witchell staling that the writer understood that the winner of her special prize in the fancy work class is a professional worker, and therefore not eligible to compete in amateur classes. The writer asked that the matter he investigated and should it prove correct that the money be not paid but added to the funds of the Society. During a discussion it was pointed out that the winner, a Eeilding exhibitor, was not a professional, and that even if she were, there was nothing in the ruies or conditions governing the section to disqualify ner. It was unanimously decided to award the prize, but in future to set out in the catalogue that all classes of work entered in thus class as In the others were for amateurs only. This matter was referred to the rules revision committee. It was decided to draw up the catalogue tor the autumn show without delay and a committee meeting will be called cl an early date for this purpose. A discusiou took place in respect to overlapping the judge’s award and the popular vote iu inspect to decorated tables. It was pointed out that if the popular vote was to be contiuued in this class it should he separated from exhibits to be classed by the judge and that greater care should be exercised iu issuing the voting tickets. Ou the motion of Dr. Mandl, votes of thanks were passed to the president, secretary and stewards lor the painstaking way in which they had discharged their duties. The president and secretary suitably responded. Other matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
