A CHALLENGE AND ITS SEQUEL.
Feilding, November 29,
Recently the Rev Mr Hammond, No-Eicense lecturer, in speaking at Feilding, stated that a pictorial advertisement ol empty shops, etc,, in Masterton was false and misleading. Mr M. M’Mauaway, president of the local Licensed Victuallers’ Association, challenged Mr Hammond on the point, and said that he would give £25 to the hospital if the advertisement was false. Two adjudicators were then appointed to examine matters, these being Messrs W. J. B, Trewiu (barrister and Mayor), and H. M’lntyre, M.A., L/L/.8. They proceeded to Mastertou on Saturday to investigate, and presented their judgment today.
it is to the effect that one of the premises was photographed twice, and made to appear like two shops, and the occupier of the one had moved to larger premises. Another picture—the Central Hotel—is occupied by two businesses, at a rental of £2 red's per week. The photograph the advertisement had been taken in the days of license, as the front had been altered since. Tong’s Meat Mart was empty, but Mr L,oug had removed to a larger shop. The Temple Chambers had never been empty. The statements of bankruptcies included those from outside the electoral district. The statement that the Caledonian Society had iost was lalse, as they had made a £bi profit. St. Patrick’s Day Association : They did not succumb through No-Ticense. A certain photograph of empty bottles was suspected of halving been taken prior to No-Ticense. The statement that people had lost faith in Masterton had no foundation. Mr Hammond therefore wins.
