The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, November 28, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
There are a number of people in this electorate whose minds are more exercised with personal slanders against certain Parliamentary candidates than with their political utterances. We believe that Parliamentary candidates are just human, and as such have erred and will continue to make mistakes. Not one ot them throughout the Dominion can lay claim to the white flower ot a blameless life, and while we look to our candidates to maintain a high moral standard both in private and public life, yet we shall be disappointed it we seek lor perfection in any one of them. Too often the good in a man’s life is forgotten, and we only concern ourselves with the blemishes. Are there not redeeming features —if one will only look beneath the surface —even in the most abandoned? Shakespear tells us that the good is oft interred with our bones and the evil lives after. The truth of this is self-evident, and it is this fact that chains many estimable men to private life. What is true of the individual is likewise true of Governments. Anyhow, it is very regrettable to hear of certain slanders which are being circulated about certain candidates. One candidate is busy tracking down a scandal which has received a good stare, and no doubt the sequel will be heard before a judge and jury. Electors should be careful to restrict themselves to political issues, not personalities.
