The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, November 23,1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
At the risk of committing a breach of journalistic etiquette, we ieel compelled to correct a statement contained in an anonymous letter appearing in the N.Z. Times of Tuesday last. We would pass the matter over but for the fact that the journal in question has a large circulation along this coast. The writer, “Kuquirer” refers to a personal remark made by Mr Byron Brown, which, in our opinion, should not have been uttered by the candidate. It was indiscreet and was not justified, even though the candidate was suffering from misrepresentation allegedly uttered by the said person referred to. The misrepresentation could have been referred to without caricaturing the individual. Anyhow, what most concerns us is the writer’s statement that:
“Mr Brown reports his own meetings About 200
people were present at the meeting I am referring to, the majority of whom were children, but Mr Brown’s report makes it 500.”
We do not allow Mr Brown or any other candidate to supply us with reports of local political meetings. We rake full responsibility tor these and we think the candidates will all agree that they are treated fairly. At Mr Brown’s meeting there were between 500 and 600 persons present, and at the outside there would not be more than jo children present.
