BOATING FATALITIES

The capsizing of a boat \v <s the c mse of Antonio Ferratti, a single man, twenty-three years of age, losing his life near Paremata on Sunday morning. In company’ with a mate, Roberta Pezimo, Ferratti left Mana Island, where both were employed as labourers by a Mr A. Villers, for Paremata. The men were iu a small boat, which had only a jib set, and at the time there was a strong breeze blowing and a heavy swell. About 11.30 o'clock, when crossing the bar of Porirua harbour, a violent squall of wind caught the sail and the craft capsized. Poth men clung to the boat, aud a party quickly set out fiom Plimmerton to the rescue. The wind was so strong, however, that all efforts to approach the unfortunate men by rowing were of no avail. Shortly alterwards a fisherman, Mr James Andrews, aud Messrs Joseph Auckland, M. Sarich and B. Aldridge, went off iu a motor boat aud soon reached the scene ot the mishap, Noticing the boat coming, Ferratti released his hold aud attempted to swim towards it, but becoming exhausted, he sank and was not seen again. Peziuo hung 011 to the overturned boat and was picked up by the rescuers. A search was made for Ferralli’s body, but up till Sunday eveniug it bad not beeu recoveied.

The deceased, who had been a sailor, was a native ot Italy and had not been long in New Zealand. None of his relatives reside in the Dominion. Nei.son, Nov. 20. A young man named Henry Bnu was drowned at Takaka yesterday through the capsize of a small sailing boat, which was struck by a squall. FIiATIIERSTON, Nov. 20. A coaling accident occurred at lake Ferry, Lower Valley, yesur.iay, at n o'clock, whereby a man named George Utumiug, an employee of George Hume, sheep larmer, lost his file. Together with three others, he was crossing the ferry at the entrance lo the Wairarapa Lake in a keelbottomed boat, when it capsized. The other men were able to reach the shore, but Dunning was washed out lo sea. His body was picked up on the Whangaimoaua beach this moiuiug.
