WHAT IS THE QUESTION? True to its instincts the Liquor Traffic is trying desperately to focus public attention on everything but the real issue. It talks wildly of accommodation, of tourists, of an imaginary increase in taxation, of the Bible, and of liberty, It has no great regard for accuracy in its facts. It does not care to refer to its own record of drunkenness. It preserves a heroic silence about the uniform and enormous decrease of drunkenness in No-License arears. It would far rather talk about side issues. But what is the real question ? It is this —Does the Liquor Traffic deserve to continue ? It is this —Would New Zealand be better without the Liquor Traffic ? What has the Liquor Traffic done last year ? It made over 7000 drunkards. Remember that against none of these was there a previous conviction for drunkenness registered. 7000 fresh cases of drunkenness. 279 of these being women. Whose father, whose husband, whose son will form one of this year’s tale of first convictions ? Do you want this sort of thing to continue ? Do you care to think of one of these cases coming from your home ? Then, besides the drunkenness, there is the degradation produced by the Liquor Traffic. There, is -haracter undermined by it. Do you want that to contn . We do not speak here of the taxation, of the business, of the finance of Prohibition. In all ways the Liquor Traffic is a parasite on society, contributing nothing to its welfare, disgorging occasionally a fraction of the money it has sucked from the people. But it does not return anything of the life blood, the character, the efficiency, the hopes, the bright homes, that it has drained from its victims. Voter! Don’t be fooled by any side issues. The Liquor Traffic is not mending—drunkenness is increasing and only in License areas. The Liquor Traffic does not intend to mend. It is out after your money every time. It will tell you any story that it thinks will fool or quiet youThis is the real Question : Shall the Liquor Traffic Continue? Vote National Prohibition and Local No-Liccnsc.
