The local Association’s competition for the Austin Shield was commenced on Saturday, The matches set down for decision were Awahou v. Maitai, at Maitai, and Himataugi v. Foxton at Foxton, but the match to have been played locally did not take place on account of the Himatangi team failing to put in an appearance. About twenty players had rolled up on the ground, and a very good practice was indulged in.
The Awahou-Maitai match was a very interesting one, and resulted in a win tor the visitors by 15 runs on the first innings. The pitch was very poor, and this was responsible for the small scores registered. Awahou batted first and scored 41, the only double - figure scorer being Knewstub, with 10. Hickson and Wickham, the Maitai team’s bowlers, bowled particularly well, and after more practice will no doubt be a source of trouble to batsmen. Maitai could only knock up 26, of which Clarke scored 11. Bowe was the most successlul of Awahou’s bowlers. Unfortunately, only the bare scores were kept, and consequently it is impossible to give the bowling averages. The players were most hospitably entertained by the Maitaiites, who did all in their power to make the outing an enjoyable one for the visitors. The following are the scores :
Himataugi has withdrawn fror •. the competition on account c; being unable to raise a team. Next Saturday Foxton will play Maitai on the Park pitch.
