The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, October 28, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Thk Council has definitely decided to hold picture entertainments in the Coronation Hall every alternate Wednesday and Saturday nights and matinees every Saturday afternoon. That picture entertainments have become fixed institutions in eve ry jarge centre is well-known, suc h exhibitions have proved tb emse ives profitable to the promote rs an( j entertaining and instructi ve to ttie P u^^c - Some perma nen t attraction ot this nature b eeu badly needed in Foxton, particularly on Saturday evenings, when numbers of men come into the town to break the monotony of camp life. They can now attend a place ot amusement, which we have no doubt they will greatly appreciate. Fast Saturday night was proof of this fact. One young fellow remarked to a Councillor that it was tfie cheapest and best Saturday night's amusement he had yet had in Foxton. We believe, however, that the Council has made a mistake in not setting the hall aside for picture entertainments every Saturday night, instead of alternate Saturdays. The argument that it would effect the town shopping will not stand close investigation. People who intend to patronise Saturday entertainments have ample time up

to S o'clock to make their purchases. It surely does not require the whole evening for shopping ! The object of the Council is to make the hall a paying concern, and if they compare the Saturday and Wednesday takings they will find that by carrying out the alternate idea they are going to lose a considerable sum of money annually. II we can judge the pulse of the ratepayers on this point, we should say that the Council’s action will not meet with their approval. In order to protect the tradespeople and to be consistent, the Council should take steps to close the hall on Saturday nights against travelling companies, for they look upon Saturday as the best show night of the week, and there will be a good deal of booking for Saturday nights by outside companies during the year.
