CONDEMNED TO DEATH.
Sydney, Oct. 25
Dr Peacock has been found guilty of the murder of the girl Davies, and has been sentenced to death.
The prisoner denied having told Poke that the girl had died, and that he had secretly disposed of the body and burned the clothes. He knew nothing of the whereabouts of Davies after she left the hospital on August 25th. He recognised that it would have been better had he thought less of her secret and more about himself, and frankly told the detectives what he knew.
The Chief Justice strongly summed up against the prisoner, stating that the offence which had caused the death of the girl was a particularly dangerous and heinous one, and was a dreadful menace to the community. It struck at all that was best from the State’s point of view in the system of marriage. The practices of such men as Dr Peacock induced young girls to take risks and perils of an impure life.
