LABOUR DAY.
Under the Public Holidays’ Act, 1910, Labour Day is now permanently fixed for the fourth Monday in October instead of, as formerly, the second Wednesday in October. Next Monday, the 23rd will, therelore, be Labour Day. The Chiet inspector forwards the following iutormation in respect to the position of Labour Day in shops, factories, etc.: — (x) Re shops ; Labour Day is not a compulsory holiday. All that is provided tor under the Act is that under Section 19 any shopkeeper may, if he chooses, observe his half-holiday on the afternoon of Labour Day instead of on the regular day in the same week. (2) Under the Factories Act: Labour Day must be given as a holiday without any deduction of wages to all females and boys under eighteen, (3) Under Awards : Where any Award provides w. Labour Day being given as a holiday the Award must, of course, be complied with. This generally applies to all employees.
