The services in St. Mary’s Church to-morrow will be conducted at 5.30. a.m. the by Rev. Father Kelly. A suggestion has been made that the name of our seaside resort should be changed from Te Wharangi to Palmerston West. What nest? The caretaker of the local hall has erected substantial hordings in various parts of the town whico will be under the Council’s supervision.
The services iu All Saints’ Church to-morrow will be ; 8 a.m. Holy Communion, n a.m. matins and sermon, 7 p.m. evensong and sermon.
A five-roomed cottage on Karamu road, Hastings, was destroyed by fire yesterday. The owner (Thomas Ryan) was smoking iu bed, and set fire to the bedclothes. He had a narrow escape. Only a little clothing was saved. During the Bishop of Wellington’s visit to Foxton on Wednesday, October 25th, he will hold a confirmation lor the Maoris in All Saints’ Church at 3 p.m., and in the evening will conduct a mission service at 7.30 o’clock.
The services in the local Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev. T. Coatsworth, who will take for his morning subject, “ In the Wilderness ” and iu the evening “On the Island of Malta.” Mr Coats worth will also preach at Himatangi at 2.30. p.m.
Says the Palmerston Staudaid : A novel donation to the Hospital funds has been received by the secretary, Mr W. Stubbs. It comes with a letter from Foxton, signed ”D. W.,” and stating, ” Enclosed please find postal note for 6s, being witness’s expenses at the Foxton Court.” The example is one which might occasionally be copied without inconvenience.
The anniversary services in connection with the Presbyterian Sunday School will be held tomorrow. The Rev. G. K. Aitkeu will conduct the services morning and evening. Special hymn sheets and order of services have been prepared and are specially attractive. The children have been receiving special instructions in singing the hymns, and the services promise to be 01 an instructive and interesting character. In the morning the subject of address will be ” The Lost Sheep and the Good Shepherd.” In the evening the subject of the sermon will be “Decision for Christ.” Besides the attractive hymns which have been selected, Mrs Hall, of Whitanui, whose voice is always a delight to hear, will sing a solo at the evening service.

Monday is the last discount day for gas accounts.* Gales of terrific force blew along this coast last night, and a good deal of damage was caused to gardens unprotected by shelter. The Tongariro will bring 450 assisted passengers to New Zealand from Loudon, and the Mamari in December 400, including a hundred domestic servants.
The festival of the Jewish Feast of the Tabernacle commenced last Saturday, and concludes to-day. Festival services are being held in the various synagogues in the Dominion.
The Rev Cecil Smith, of Otaki, and the Rev Innes Jones, of Feildiug, are exchanging pulpits for six weeks, and with their wives will exchange quarters next week. The secretary of the Foxton Bowling Club has received an invitation for members to attend the opening of the Otaki Club’s green which takes place on Monday, the 23rd. instant. A record business in booking took place at the Town Clerk’s office this morning, when 61 seats were booked for the opening concert in three-quarters of an hour. Mr Field intends to visit Foxton after the close of the session, in about 10 days’ time. He will then continue on the warpath every day up till the election.
The valuable collection of specimens of Maori industry and art associated with the name of the late Sir Walter Buffer has been presented to the Dominion, Iree of all conditions, by his sou, Mr W. Leo Buffer, ok Wellington.
We have received a letter from Mr Ed. Newman M.P., in which he states ; “It may interest you to know that I have applied to the Minister of Marine for a grant for the improvement of the river, and hope to be as successful as last year.”
The Christchurch Presbytery, at a recent meeting, unanimously decided to send a second “call” from Methven to the Rev. G. K. Aitken. The “call” has been forwarded to the Wanganui Presbytery and a meeting of the latter will deal with it at a special meeting to be held at Marton on Monday.
The Mayor of Feilding reported at the Council meeting on the withdrawal of the Foxton Harbour Board Rating Bill, and expressed his thanks to Mr D. H. Guthrie, M.P., for the assistance he had given the delegates from Feilding, and for his success in having the Bill withdrawn. We have received from the secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club the programme for the ensuing season. Their spring meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, November 29th and 30th, 1911. This year the club have increased their stake money, the sum of has be added to the first day’s stakes and £l lOO to the second day’s. Nominations for the spring meeting close at 5.30 p. m. on Friday, November 3 id. Legislation has been introduced by the Minister for Marine, providing tor a rehearing regarding the wreck of the Elingamite on “Three Kings.” A rehearing has been granted on the ground that new and important evidence regarding the incorrect charting of the Islands has been discovered. The Bill provides that application for rehearing must be made within three mouths by, or on behalf, of the master or any certified officer of the steamship. Provision is made that evidence taken at former investigations may be accepted by the Court.

The committee is sparing no pains in the arrangements for the Municipal Ball next Friday, and it gives every appearance ot being the “Catch of the Season.” What with the renowned Hanley’s Baud and a perfect dance floor specially prepared, dancers will be in their element. The stage will be arranged as a drawing-room, artistically decorated and provided with tables for those who prefer cards rather than dancing. The fancy dresses will be numerous, and the artistic arrangements of the whole Hall, with dancing in full swing, should provide a spectacle rarely witnessed in Foxton. So that those who do not desire to enter into the swing of jollification may have a chance of witnessing the performance, the dress circle will be available for the very small sum of one shilling. The catering is in the capable hands of Mr M. Perreau, who intends going to no end of trouble so that his lot will not be overshadowed by that ol the committee.
