THE CITIZENS BALL.
[to the editor.]
Sir. —What is this I hear today that a subscription is being got up to buy a double ticket in order that one of our worthy citizens may attend the ratepayers ball along with his good lady ? Why is such a subscription necessary ? Simply because the price of the tickets is beyond the reach of the majority of the ratepayers of Foxton ! A ratepayers ball in the ratepayers hall, paid for with the ratepayers money, and a charge of half a guinea for a double ticket. I say, Mr Editor, it is exhorbitant! How many weeks would a man have to work on the wharf—as things are now-—• to save half a guinea ? None but the “upper ten’’ can afford it, and the general opinion is, that this ball is got up for the benefit of the Mayor and Councillors, and a few of their particular friends. Surely this is a case where
