monthly meeting. The monthly meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board was held in the Board’s Office last night. Present: —Messrs B. G. Gower (chairman), W. S. Carter and O. R. Robinson. Apologies lor absence were received from Messrs F. S, Easton and H. G. Hammond. The Clerk reported the amount to credit of loan account as count jQ 176 is id. The No. 3 account was ,£204 8s yd at debit. Since last meeting ,£127 19s had been placed to credit on account of rates and contribution irom the Manawatu County Council. Wages amounting to YU 2 13s 2d were paid on September 30th. A further transfer of £IOO can be made to No. 3 account, which will reduce the debit of that account to Yu°4 8s yd.—The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to ,£4B 3s 2d against loan account and £l6 ns against general account were passed for payment. The overseer reported on the progress of the work since last meeting as follows :—“ We started dredging on September 18th, and after i£ days work had the misfortune to break a casting. It was sent down to Petone, and we had to wait ten days before it was returned. At present everything in connection with the dredge is working satisfactorily. We have completed 5 chains, 17 yards oi drain lor 12 days dredging, giving an average of about 150 yards of spoil shifted per day.” The letter from Mr K. Kennedy, the crane driver, which was held over from last meeting, asking that he be given mechanical charge of the dredge, and in the event of his getting up steam and no work being done he receive half a day’s pay, was next dealt with. Mr Kennedy was in attendance and stated that all he required was that his suggestions as to repairs necessary should be given effect to. It wn< d (Tfe l on the motiou of the man, seconded by Mr Robinson, that Mr Kennedy, as crane-driver have mechanical charge ot crane and grab, and that Mr Madden, as overseer or foieman, have general direction of work, and his judgment shall be accepted as to whether work is to proceed or cease, when machinery is in order.
The matter of paying half a day’s wages for getting up steam when no work is done was discussed at some length, and it was eventually decided to let the question stand over until the next monthly meeting ot the Board. The Board rose at 9.50 p.m.
