THE FOXTON BEACH.
MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS.
A meeting of householders and residents at Foxton Beach was held at Palmerston on Thursday to discuss various matters relating to improvements at the beach. Those present were Drs. Peach and Stockwell, and Messrs Mounsey, S. Jickell, Holben, Torstensen, Browning, Clelaud,
Robert, Kirk, 1,. Wilson (representing Mr Langley), Dahl, Whalley, Bett, Daniells, Wood, (representing Mr McKenzie) and Piatt.
An apology was received from His Worship the Mayor. Mr Mounsey was voted to the chair.
Dr. Peach spoke of the necessity for providing suitable sanitary arrangements owing to the growth in popularity of the beach as a seaside resort. If something was not done instead of being a health resort it would be full of disease. Dr. Peach then read portions of a publication by Dr. Mason on military hygiene. As to the cost of the work this would not be great as tenants of houses would be pleased to pay an extra rental for greater conveniences. There was any amount of waste ground there for the disposal of refuse, and if such were buried shallow it would be a perfectly sanitary method, and in time it would improve the ground. Mr Daniells said every doctor in Palmerston was in agreement with Dr. Peach as to the importance of this matter.
A vote of thanks was accorded Dr. Peach for his address.
Mr Jickell said he objected to the disposal ol the refuse being left to the individual. Dr. Peach's suggestion was sound, but he preferred the disposal of the refuse at sea as was done at many of the principal watering places in England. The sea was a most excellent septic tank. In reply to Mr Holbeu, Dr. Peach said that a septic tank at the beach would be most sanitary.
Mr Jickell favoured the formation ot a Town Boaid that would give the whole running of the affairs of the township into their own hands. The rating need not be great. The beach was not a pleasant place to go to at present and it would never be until some local authority was formed to deal with matters of sanitation. There were now 75 householders there, and the population was quite sufficient to warrant the formation of such a body. Mr Holbeu said they would probably get the Harbour Board to assist them, as the proposal would increase the value of the leases.
The Chairman, Mr Daniells and Mr Holben all strongly urged the desirability of meeting the Harbour Board in the matter and finally after lengthy discussion and several motions and amendments, it was resolved on the motion of Mr by Mr Browning, that the meeting affirm the desirability of forming a Town Board at Te Wharangi, but that before any steps are taken a deputation wait on the Foxtou Harbour Board and ask for its cooperation. The following deputation was oppointed to wait on the Harbour Board : Messrs Robert, Belt, Daniells, Holben and Mounsey. A vote of thanks was passed to the Mayor for the use of the room_
