A good story by Mrs Barton.
A public-house in New South Wales was about to close its doors, as the result of the Reduction Vote. The landlady was lamenting the fact to the charwoman who was scrubbing her floors, and said she did not know what she would do for a living. The charwoman looked up and said, “ I can tell you what you can do for a living. My husband earns £3 10s a week. He brings me home about 10s a week, and spends the rest at your house. When your house is closed he will bring me home £3 10s and I will not need to go out charring, so that you can have my job.”
