POLITICAL.
Mr Byron Brown addressed live meetings last week along the Mauawatu line from Parapararau to Shannon, and received excellent receptions at each place. Votes of thanks and confidence were carried at each meeting without any hostility being shown. Mr Brown has been dealing very trenchantly with the exessive taxation and the growth of our public debt. Native land legislation has also been coming in for much criticism in the towns that are suffering from the curse of tied up native lauds. Mr Brown is meeting with much more encouragement in the present campaign than ever before. This is largely accounted for by the manner in which he is giving his addresses. The old style of fiery denunciation has gone altogether and the speaker has adopted a much quieter and more persuasive tone. He has not mentioned the names of one of his opponents and has told his hearers that he will devote himself entirely to setting forth his own platform. —Contributed.
