HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A general meeting of the above was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday night, and despite the inclement weather there was a good attendance. The President, Mr Alex. Speirs, occupied the chair. Correspondence was read and received, and accounts in connection with the Bulb Show wwe passed for payment. A special vole of thanks was passed to the judge and Miss Woodroofe for services rendered in connection with the Bulb Show. Mr Witchell’s donation of a rose bowl for competition among amateur rose exhibitors within a nine mile radius of Foxton was favourably commented upon. Mr Witchell pointed out that the trophy would be donated for three roses named, two blooms of each to be grown by exhibitor; no labour to be employed, except to dig the ground. The bowl to be won three times, the winner’s name to be inscribed thereon each year. The bowl to be ;:ompeted for at the Spring Show, commencing 1912. It was pointed out that the bowl was donated in time to allow competitors to see the roses exhibited by the various nurserymen at the forthcoming show in order to allow them to make their plans accordingly. The competition will be confined stricly to amateurs. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Witchell for his trophy. It was decided to purchase two gross of vases, samples and quotations to be submitted to the President, Secretary and Mrs Greig with power to act. It was decided to register the Society under the Unclassified Societies Act.

The following judges were asked to act at the forthcoming spring show: —Decorative classes, Mrs Mellsop; fancy work, Miss Mortenson; cookery, Mrs J. A. Nash ; school work, Mr Elliot ; pot plants and blooms, Mr A. J. Shailer ; produce, Mr Aim.

It was decided that entries for school work must be in the hands of the secretary one week before the show and that this stipulation be inserted iu the catalogue. It was decided to allot space at the forthcoming show to the following nurserymen: Messrs Wightou, Shailer, Horton, Beunefield, Walsh, Just and Mayo.

Other matters of a minor nature were discussed and the meeting rose.
