WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held on Monday night. Present : Messrs Fred. Piraui (Chairman), F. M. Spurdle, D. H. Guthrie, M.P., F. Purnell, Alf. Fraser, E. Dixon, P. O’Dea. Leave of absence was granted to Mr J. P. Aldridge owing to illness in his family. It was decided to take steps for the instruction of pupils in fire drill in the large schools. It was decided to invite applications for the position of principal of the Wanganui Technical College at a salary of ,£450 a yean Resignations accepted: Miss Robertson, Awahuri; Miss Rashleigh, assistant, Cheltenham ; Miss 1. Neilsen, assistant, Wanganui D.H.S.
Appointments approved: Umumuri, Miss Eva Hull, assistant; Normauby, Miss E. M. Cody, assistant ; Mr Swinbourue, beadmaster, Crofton. Dominion Day is to be observed at all schools by a short ceremony. It was decided to give leave to cadets and officers to attend local celebrations, provided they return to school in the afternoon. The Education Department granted for additions to the Moutoa school ond £2 10s a week for a hall at Wanganui for the infants until a new school is erected.
Leave of absence to attend examination granted : Miss O. M. Cook, S. Makirikiri; Mr H. H. Richardson, Queen’s Park ; Mr P. H. Roche, Rata; Mr H, O. Hewlett, Turakina-; Mr C. Browning, Utuwai.
Leave of absence granted to; Miss H. B. Lanyon, Silverhope (extended to January 31st) ; Miss B. Bryant, Campbell street; Miss A. R. O’Donnell, Hinau ; Miss M. Ray, Bunnythorpe; Miss D. E. Harrison, Aramoho; Mr H. C. Stewart, Lytton street; Mr W. Smith, Casllecliff; Miss Sampson, Makowbai.
The following positions are to be offered to the teachers named ; Mr T. B. Best, Atton; Mr E. Rockel, Jackeytown; Miss E. Willetts, assistant, Cheltenham ; Miss R. Pinches, Wanganui D.H.S, ; MDs V. Foote (temporary), Awanua ; Miss I. Cameron, Pakihikura; Miss D. Lamber, West Rangitikei. Eleven plans were received from competitors in Christchurch, Wellington, Foxton, Palmerston, Feilding, and Wanganui, for the Kindergarten school at Wanganui, and the first prize was awarded to Mr T, H. Battle, Wanganui, who competed under the non-de-plume of “Advance.” Mr Hood, draughtsman to the Board, was second, under the name of “ Capital.” Tenders are to be invited for the building at once. Grants were made as follows: Waituna West, lencing; Glen Oroua, fencing; Pukeroa, fencing ; Waiata, shelter shed; Ohiugaiti, shelter shed; Okaiawa, spouting and drainage; Momohaki, shelter shed ; Patea, tank ; Valley Road, fencing; Lytton Street, water connection ; Kiwitea, repairs and washhouse ; Foxtonf repairs to residence; Wanganui D.H.S., furniture, teachers’ rooms.
