Mr Donald Fraser, of Pukenui, in a letter to our Marton contemporary considers “it a very opportune time to ask candidates lor Parliament if they will, if returned, do their best to simplify the laws of this country so that the ordinary man who has to obey them can understand them. Though ignorance of the law is no plea, yet in my opinion there is not a man In this country who can fully explain the laws we are compelled to live under, aud I believe that there is no other country in the world which pays as much per head of the population as this country does, taking into consideration all the ramifications of the existing laws.” It is somewhat of a paradox that our laws should be so complicated, in view of the fact, that there are so many legal gentlemen in Parliament.
