ASSAULTING CHINAMEN.

A charge of having assaulted two Chinese laundrymen, Joe Ben and Joe Poy, was preferred against Peter Olsen and Dennis Sheeriu at the Palmerston Police Court, before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., on Saturday. It appears that the accused men went to Joe Wah’s laundry on Thursday night, and a dispute arose over the recovery of some washing. Some fighting took place, and it was alleged that Olsen struck Joe Ben and Sheerin assaulted Joe Poy. The charges were dealt with separately. After hearing the evidence, his Worship said that he was not satisfied that the blows struck by the accused were struck in selfdefence. Sheerin was fined and Olsen £7 3s 6d, in default fourteen days’ hard labour.
