THE FOOTPATHS.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL. At Monday night’s Council meeting it was recommended in the Town Clerk’s report that the Avenue road and Wharf street footpaths should be asphalted. In discussing the matter the Mayor said at the present time the Council had plenty ot tar on hand, but it was no good tarring the footpaths until they had been kerbed, and the Council was not in a position to do the kerbing this year. From now on they must go very carefully. The footpath in (rout of the Hall certainly required putting in order, but he considered the rest should be held over until they had arranged to do the kerbing. Cr Speirs considered the work recommended should be carried, out as it had been passed to be done mouths ago. It wouldn’t cost much. Wharf street and the balance of the Main street footpaths should be done and he would also like to see the Avenue done to Gray’s corner. The tar was apparently unsaleable and the whole work would not cost a great deal. The Mayor contended that the kerbing should be done first. Cr Coley favoured doing Wharf street where, he said, the kerbing was good, but it would be only “chucking” money away to do the Avenue. It wanted regrading. It was decided that Wharf street footpaths only be gone on with.
