“TWO-UP.”

It has been reported to us by our Palmerston contemporary that “two-up” schools are flourishing in certain districts in the Mauawatu, not a great distance from Palmerston. In one locality the game is said to be played with great persistency, and large sums change hands weekly. Sunday is the day set apart for this form of gambling, and the operations are conducted in a manner which is said to defy detection. Our informant says a space has been cleared in the bush, where seats have been placed for the comfort of the gamblers who play ‘‘two-up'’ the whole day. Scouts are thiown out and other arrangements made under a system which is as clever as it is safe lor the gamblers’ operations. It is alleged that many flaxmill employees have been lured into the game with disastrous results so far as their pockets are cancerned, and the successful gamblers cau show winnings which would create great surprise. If the allegations are correct they reflect very little credit upon the individuals responsible for this state of things, and police interference will be admitted to be highly desirable.
