MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present :—Crs J. G. Wilson (Chairman), J. Henson, T. Masters, Barber, H. Hunt, and R. B. McKenzie. Leave of absence was granted to Cr G. Kendall. The following letters were received :
From Advances Office, stating that the special order authorising the Foxton Beach road loan had not been advertised in the week preceding its confirmation. From District Traffic Manager, confirming the offer of ten M waggons for twelve weeks from September Ist, and offering to build two for each. From District Engineer, offering to put in a crossing at Metcalfe’s, near Bainesse, for £ 6. From Counties’ Association, asking that steps be taken to get pledges from political candidates in favour of a comprehensive local government Bill. From Mr E. Newman, M.P., forwarding a letter from, the Hon. D. Buddo to the effect that it was too late to consider any application for a Coronation fountain at Awahuri.
From Messrs J. E. Nathan and Co., asking for information re tram.
From Mr J, W. Proctor, claiming damages for loss of horse, damage to trap and personal injuries sustained through trap being upset at a crossing between Sanson and Bulls.
From Mr George Edwards, Lady’s Mile, Foxton, complaining of drifting sand. From Dr. A. H. E. Wall, consenting to deviation of road at Moutoa.
From Mr T. Bowe, Moutoa, offering to lease road reserve.
From Messrs T. Coker and Bros., asking Council to form about 25 chains of road at Motuiti.
Mr Hickford reported having all necessary repairs carried out during the month. It was decided to refer Mr George Edwards’ complaint about drifting sand to the Foxton Harbour Board, who owned the land adjoining.
Mr Bowe’s application for a lease of reserve at Moutoa, was held over, pending a valuation of the land with a view to selling it.
Ratepayers who are persistently using the roads in the county for grazing stock are to be prosecuted. Legal advice is to be obtained in reference to Mr Proctor’s claim for damages for injuries. The Clerk was instructed to call in all rates.
Overseer to report on Coker Bros.’ application for road at Motuiti.
Mr Birchall’s application for increase in wages was left to the overseer to deal with. Road deviations at Moutoa to be surveyed. TRAM report. Mr A. K. Drew, Tram Manager, reported on the working of the tramway for August. A debit balance of 14s lod s shown for the mouth, including extra labour for platelaying, ,£54 Bs, and in addition 14s gd was expended on cottage at Rongotea siding, sleepers, dog-spikes, etc. The chief items of traffic were : Merchandise, 173 tons; timber, 21,400 ft; metal, 315 yards; manure, 37 tons ; fares, ,£4 6s 46. The locomotive Rangitikei is not quite completed, although it is running on the ordinary trips. The Mauawatu is at present undergoing repairs, the tubes being expanded and new ferules put in the fire-box, as well as an alteration to the smoke-box. treasurer’s report.
Mr A. K. Drew reported the balances of the various accounts to be: General account, debit credit ,£358 13 7d. Available lor expenditure to March 31, 1912 : Saudou Riding, £97 7s gd ; Mt. Stewart, ,£169 5s xxd ; Waitohi, ,£169 xos id ; Rongotea, 14s 2d; Carnarvon, ,£195 4 s 2d i Kawakawa. ,£333 8s 3d ; Awahou, 4s gd; Whirokino, ,£ll6 17s Bd.
