COUNCIL DECIDES TO RUN PICTURE SHOW.
WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT —SATURDAY NIGHTS.
A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday night to discuss matters in connection with the Coronation Town Hall. There were present : His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.,) and Crs. Adams, Chrystall, Carter, Greig, Gibbs, Rimmer, Speirs and Stewart. Messrs John Fuller and Sons submitted an offer to take the hall for a picture entertainment on Saturday nights for twelve months at per night; price to include lighting, current and piano. They stipulated that if their offer were accepted the hall was not to be let to any other picture company during the period of their tenancy. Should the Council, instead of letting the hall to them, decide to run their own picture show, they were prepared to supply them with films for £2 per night.
There was considerable discussion and it was eventually decided on the motion of Cr Speirs seconded by Cr Greig, that Messrs Fuller and Sous offer to rent the hall be declined.
It was decided on the motion of Cr Greig seconded by Cr Speirs, that the Council decide to run its own picture show.
On the motion of Cr Adams seconded by Cr Greig, the Town Clerk was authorised to purchase a switchboard, cabling, etc., necessary for pictures and that the Council decides to order the films from Messrs Fuller and Sons. The picture show will be run weekly on Saturday nights. SCAl,lv OF CHARGES. The Hall Committee submitted a scale of charges for hall and with some slight alterations the scale was approved, and will appear in Saturday’s issue. On the motion of Cr Gibbs seconded by Cr Speirs, it was decided that the Town Clerk be authorised to let the Coronation Hall in accordance with prices fixed and rules made by the Council, and that the booking office be at the Borough Office. PIANO FOR HARR. Several offers to supply a piano for the hall were received and after discussion it was decided on the motion of Cr Greig seconded by Cr Chrystall, that the matter of purchasing a piano for the hall be left in the hands of the Mayor and Cr Speirs to make a recommendation to the Council. OPENING NIGHT. The question of the form the opening was to lake was brought up and it was decided to leave the matter over until the next meeting of the Council. GENERAL. Mr M. E. Perreau applied for permission to have a private locker in the hall for the purpose of holding crockery, provisions, etc., as a convenience for catering purposes. —Decided on the motion of Cr Gibbs seconded by Cr Rimmer, that Mr Perreau be granted permission to erect at his own cost a cupboard in servery or kitchen of Town Hall under the supervision of the architect, and that the yearly rental be £i is. The Town Clerk was empowered to get a price for concrete flooring of engine room in hall and to accept price if satisfactory. An application was received to sell sweets in the hall and it was decided to call tenders for this righL , . . . Applications are to be invited for the position of caretaker, operator and engineer ; applicants to state salary required. Applications are also to be invited lor the position of pianist for one night a week. The Council rose at 10.25 p.m.
